The Tree That Was

The tree that was
Fell into the night
I just heard it go
It was no great sight

The tree that was
A home to be,
The one who listened
For all those years.

The tree that listened
To nighttime blues
To broken hearts
To quiet stares

The tree that stood
When mortals fell
When times went dark
When the world went to hell

The tree that stayed
Like a friend
Was taken out
By the wind

An old, old tree
That was so tall
And was a home
Before its fall

The tree that was
A home, a friend
Caught in storm
Met its end.
