The Princess

There was once a much loved princess

Who was born far, far away

Who was cursed to be lonely

And in a tower she had to stay.

She was promised a brave knight

For whom she laid in wait

While a dragon kept an eye

On what it saw as a bait.

The knights that came were very brave

But none of them could reach their goal

To the topmost tower where she was kept

The dragon came between them all.

She gave up on her one dream

To ride away with a handsome knight

To escape from her loneliness

To live in peace, to love with might.

She would hope, in mad despair,

That someone would come someday

To tell her that her dream exists

And to take her away.

She wanted to believe in love

She hoped that it was there for her,

But she could not dare hope for much

She could not even see a star.

She could only see the dragon green,

Which roamed around, here and there

Which stayed on guard all the while

And never let anyone near.

One fine day when she woke up

She heard a new voice across the lawn

She knew it was the voice of Hope,

Brought in with the fresh new dawn.

She knew it was not a dream

And though no one could be seen,

Someone had come to save her,

Save her from the dragon green.

He was just a simple soul,

Who people called a knight,

He did not want name or fame

He just did what he thought was right.

He was friends with the dragon green

And knew of its sadness and pain,

He wanted to rescue the princess,

So the haplesss souls could be free again.

The dragon had a home up north

Where lived its beloved children,

It wanted to leave this place behind,

This land of the woeful beings, men.

He let the lonely dragon go,

So that it could leave for home,

And then moved to the tower, where she was,

Waiting for the special moment to come.

The simple soul came up to her

And told her that he was a mere man,

He did not want kingdoms or riches,

Marrying her was not his plan.

He said he would take her to her home

Where she could just follow her heart,

And choose a worthy man for herself

With whom she can have a fresh start.

He was known for his talents, not his wealth,

Of his land he told many tales,

But reminded the princess many times

That her heart should belong to someone else.

The princess said she did not care

Whether he was poor, or what faults he had

She was rescued by this honest man,

Whose kindness and loyalty were all that mattered.

She reminded him that he saved her

From the darkness she had lived in for long.

Had he not come, she could have died,

The pain in her was just so strong.

Before he came she had prepared herself

To live alone for the rest of her life,

She was tired of the knights who came her way,

Who wanted victory, not a wife.

She saw in him a kind man,

Who came to the tower and really dared

To go against the entire world,

To just show that he cared.

She did not care for the other knights

Who came for her, proud and vain,

Who caused her tears to come rushing,

Pouring hard, like the rain.

She needed a man, to call her own,

Who would possess her heart and mind,

Who would help her to leave the memories

Of her agony, far behind.

She found what she wanted in this man,

Who was simple, quiet, benign, kind,

A little lost in his own way,

Something that she did not mind.

He knew he was famous in his land,

But how could the princess choose him?

He was a simple mortal, no knight

It all seemed to him like a dream.

But she gave her heart to the doer,

Who, in her eyes, was a true knight.

She held his hand, and they moved on,

Riding away into the night.

And thus the princess found her knight,

And were allegiant, and in love with each other.

They ruled over their land, and finally found peace,

And they found their happily ever after.
